A House in Corfu is the story of one of the most beautiful places on earth, still astonishingly unspoilt, on the west coast of Corfu.
In the early 1960s Emma Tennant's parents, on a cruise, spotted a magical bay and decided to build a house there. This book is the story of that house, Rovinia, set in 42 hectares of land above the bay where legend has it Ulysses was shipwrecked. It is also the story of the people of Rovinia - Maria, miraculous cook and presiding spirit of the house, and her husband Thodoros, as well as the inhabitants of the local village.
Rezensionen / Stimmen
"Tennant is taking on stiff competition from the Durrell brothers, in the form of Lawrence's Prospero's Cell and - more famously - Gerald's magical My Family and Other Animals. Both set an absurdly high standard, so it's good to report that she very much holds her own" -- Jeremy Lewis * Literary Review * "The longing for the ease and charm of Mediterranean life has provided a subject for countless writers... With this book, Emma Tennant establishes an honourable place in the canon. She writes modestly and poetically about the archaic and prodigal beauty of the place and the culture" -- Jane Shilling * Sunday Telegraph * "In the manner of Gerald Durrell, Tennant tells the story of Maria the cook and other locals, as well as evoking the surrounding landscape" -- Giles Foden * Conde Nast Traveller * "A House in Corfu is the latest in a series of short, vivid and finely written memoirs of the author's life... An earthly paradise" * Literary Review * "Tennant is strong on the ironic interaction between the Mediterranean sense of eternity and the repeated interruptions (plumbing and storms)" -- Gerald Cadogan, archaeologist & writer
