The reputation of this book had preceded it to my desk, so it was with great expectation that I opened it, seeking a definitive statement of the methods and applications of this most exciting and fast-moving field of biological microscopy. I was not disappointed....The book covers its territory well, as one might expect from such an assemblage of expert authors....The chapters complement one another, and are well cross-referenced to one another and to those in the companion volume Fluorescence Microscopy of Living Cells. Part B: Quantitative Fluorescence Microscopy--Imaging and Spectroscopy....This is a unique book, and achieves a good balance between theoretical background, practical detail and experimental example....An essential purchase for all biology libraries, and for anyone proposing to undertake fluorescence microscopy of living cells.

The editors are to be commended for producing an excellent, informative reference work which will be of great use to all who are either using these techniques, or contemplating using them. All the contributors seem to have done their best to help and inform rather than to dazzle and intimidate. There are many hints and tips included that are not present in the original papers....I can thoroughly recommend these volumes to anyone who is interested in the problem of how to view the complex processes that take place in a living cell directly.

Quite a number of new techniques are investigated in depth by the contributors. The result is an overview that will not be outdated soon....It is certainly one of the merits of these volumes that they provide a nearly complete overview of the scientific and technical know-how required.
