This work presents and discusses conditions for contemporary and future unionism in the light of societal, managerial, and internal union changes. Recent developments in employment relationships and on the labour market has changed the conditions for unionism dramatically. Severe membership losses, financial difficulties and legitimacy problems are some of the consequences. The contributors who represent a variety of countries, provide an international and interdisciplinary description of threats and challenges confronting contemporary unionism. They also analyze union strategic and structural attempts at meeting these challenges, and investigate the consequences of the increasingly changing environment for member-union relations. By addressing both the external and internal legitimacy of trade unions from an international perspective, this text should be a valuable source of information for academics and practioners interested in comparative industrial relations.
