Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy is a wide-ranging review of modern spectroscopic techniques such as X-ray, photoelectron, optical, and laser spectroscopy, and radiofrequency and microwave techniques. On the fundamental side it focuses on physical principles and the impact of spectroscopy on our understanding of the building blocks of matter. In the area of applications particular attention is given to those in chemical analysis, photochemistry, surface characterization, environmental and medical diagnostics, remote sensing and astrophysics. The audience is third or fourth year university students as well as graduate students, for whom the book serves as a course text. Research scientists and engineers can also use the book to get an overview of the latest developments in the field with ample reference to original and overview papers as well as the relevant books in various fields. The new edition provides the reader with an update on laser cooling and trapping, Bose-Einstein condensation, ultra-fast spectroscopy, high-power laser/matter interaction, satellite-based astronomy and spectroscopic aspects of laser medicine, plus recent references.

Sune Svanberg is a professor of physics and served as head of the Atomic Physics Division of Lund University till 2008 and as founding director of the multi-disciplinary Lund Laser Centre till 2010. Remaining as a senior professor at his university, he also for 10 years had a part-time appointment at South China Normal University, Guangzhou. He has extensive research experience in radiofrequency, optical and laser spectroscopy, high-power laser/matter interactions, and in the use of lasers in combustion diagnostics, environmental and ecological monitoring, as well as in medical diagnostics and treatment. He is thus in good position to cover the vast scope of the book. He has co-authored well over 600 papers and trained a large number or undergraduates and graduates in basic and applied atomic and molecular spectroscopy. He served extensively on international committees and scientific advisory committees. He received many awards, is a member of six scientific academies, holds five honorary doctor degrees and has four honorary professor appointments.
