The preparation and characterization of monolayer and multilayer films of organic molecules, physically and chemically absorbed on surfaces are discussed with special attention paid to the remarkable properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films. Dynamics of reactions at surfaces and details of the potential energy hypersurface (enabling absorption and reaction of molecules) are explored.
A variety of techniques sensitive to local adsorbate structure are covered and compared with techniques which probe long-range order. Adsorption and reactions at semiconductor surfaces emphasizing fundamental studies using surface and/or gas analysis methods are covered. The relevance of this work to etching, chemical vapour and other deposition processes is highlighted.
New techniques permitting the study of structure at the atomic level at condensed interfaces, as well as single molecular events are detailed.
