Between 1990, when magnetic dichroism in core-level photoemission (MDPE) was discovered, and today the attitude of scientists in the field has changed from surprise to a full appreciation of the physical basis. Special emphasis is laid on the application of MDPE as an element-specific magnetization probe for two-dimentional rare-earth systems.
