This text is designed as a hands-on tool for applying the ideas contained in "The Goal". It begins by breaking down the ideas into workable concepts, and for each event described in "The Goal", it considers the problem, followed by the development and implementation of the solution. "Action items" are designed to help the reader relate each idea to their specific organization before moving on to the next. In this way the concepts within the novel are described ready for implementation, and together they form the basis of a new management philosophy called Synchronous Manufacturing. At the centre of this is the belief that it is adhering to old system which used to serve manufacturing well that prevents us from seeing fresh approaches more appropriate for the last few years of the 20th century.
