This is a personal trek across a continent at the beginning of the "post-civilized" world. According to Soutter, a Sydney cabbie, "civilzation" has run its course and Australia is on the verge of a return to a pastoral, nomadic, spiritually liberated post-industrial age. When not being fascinated and repelled by his punters, Soutter and his girlfriend go to the farthest reaches of the outback, to commune with nature on Aboriginal hunting grounds. Meditating along the way upon the myth of the founding fathers and tracing the origins of the "Sheila" cult, Soutter, in this book, combines his own experience with a deep historical and critical insight into the realities and eccentricities of the Australian way of life.
