The revival of the woodblock printing tradition stands out as one of the most remarkable aspects of the complex history of Japanese art in the 20th century. This illustrated catalogue contains over 140 of the modern Japanese prints in the British Museum's collection; it was prepared to accompany an exhibition at the Museum. All schools and styles are represented, ranging from work by traditional "New Print" artists to "Creative Print" modernists, such as Onchi Koshiro. The catalogue includes a concise history of the medium since 1912. It also provides biographies of the 60 artists illustrated, and a glossary of Japanese terms. Lawrence Smith is author of "The Japanese Print since 1900".
