This book is founded on an earlier work under the same title, published in Polish in 1975. In comparison with the Polish original, the present version is considerably extended in both volume and content. It aims at the identification and understanding of the mathematical notions contained implicitly in mechanics and tying them up with physical notions and also with the historical process of the development of mechanics.
