"Qwan, Volume 1" - Teikou leads Qwan and Chikei to a mysterious aristocratic girl with the ability to control insects. Qwan mistakes the girl, Daki, for a demon and attempts to eat her, but try as he might, he can't. Daki escapes, and Qwan and Chikei head for the capital city Luoyang. Chikei splurges on evening companions for he and Qwan, to Qwan's indifference. Again, Qwan and Chikei encounter Daki, though this time they also meet her mysterious "father" Lord Yuushi. Yuushi seems to have a connection to bugs as well, in his case spiders, and Qwan takes him for a demon as well. One of Chikei's female companions for the evening, Shaga, however, warns Qwan not to try to eat Yuushi. Later, brash Qwan immediately attempts to break into the Imperial Palace where the text is held, much to Chikei's dismay. Yuushi, learning of Qwan's quest, does everything he can to stop Qwan from obtaining the text. Yuushi sees Qwan as a threat to his ambition to rule. Fortunately for Qwan, a young aristocrat named Aman, grandson of one of the Eunuchs that advise the Emperor, takes a curiosity to his quest, and guides him to his grandfather and safety from Yuushi.
But, will Qwan be safe when Daki sends two of her bug servants, Hakuhiko and Seishigaku to finish him off?
