This monograph discusses the internal migration and regional population dynamics in China at the provincial level. Internal migration is important in the process of national socio-economic integration. Little has been written until recently about the internal migration in China due to lack of systematic data. This monograph makes a systematic analysis of the internal migration in China using recent population data. The regional population trends since the 1950s are also analyzed to examine if there are major changes in the spatial patterns of population. Finally, a consistent regional population projection is made for the period 1987-2087 using a multiregional population model. This model ensures that the regional totals are consistent with national population projections while detailed regional population trends are revealed. The implications of regional population dynamics for socio-economic development and planning are discussed in the concluding chapter.
