Neurofilaments are the major structures found inside neurons, and their processes. They are about 10 nm in diameter as visualized in the electron microscope and are composed of several different protein subunits. This book examines the protein subunits in detail and also reviews current literature relating to these protein subunits, the control of their expression, their polymerization to form 10 nm filaments, their distribution in the nervous system and their possible role in various disease states. Finally, the various proposed functions of these proteins are discussed.
