In the songs ascribed to the mediaeval poet Neidhart (d. ca. 1240) there are many indications of a particular awareness in the treatment of names. The line quoted in the title of this book, in which a name is curtly judged as 'appropriate' and thus in some sense made an object of reflection, is only one of many examples. This is reason enough to examine Neidhart's play with names in more detail. The work is devoted to the interplay of literary names and parodistic intention in one particular area of Middle High German literature. The author examines the way names are used to speak, embody and classify, and applies modern literary onomastics to mediaeval literature to produce new findings.
