Based upon the author's 24 years of professional experience, A Primer for Stuttering Therapy presents a comprehensive stuttering therapy program in an easy-to-understand fashion. This is an innovative video/text package that allows students and clinicians to read descriptions of stuttering therapy and then actually view the discussed techniques in videotape examples of therapy being conducted. The skills for teaching fluency are broken down into a number of easy to follow components and each component is demonstrated and discussed on the video. The author emphasizes the need to consider not only the client's speech skills, but also consider the client's emotional perspectives associated with stuttering. To that end, there is a chapter that addresses counseling clients as well as discussion and examples throughout every chapter that deal with both the client's speech and the client's emotional development.
The material presented in this book will help students and clinicians learn to become problem solvers regarding therapy rather than technicians who follow a recipe. The reader is also provided with a number of opportunities to make measurements from videotape examples and check their responses with the answers provided by the author in the final appendix. This primer serves as a continuing reference for students and clinicians who may go back to the text and video as many times as necessary while working with clients who stutter. The book discusses teaching fluency skills and counseling clients who range in age from 2 to 90. The information provided and the variety of therapy examples result from the author's daily work with children and adults who stutter; these examples include a working vocabulary that is used in therapy with the client.
