Concentrating on English as a second language as it is used by Black Africans, "English in Africa" offers the reader a broad introduction to English within a general socio-linguistic framework. It draws on the author's personal fieldwork in Eastern Africa, unpublished research material and information provided by fellow linguists both inside Africa and beyond. This text aims to provide an informative outline of the historical development of English in Africa and investigates the present status, functions and firms of the language, including the use of English and its varieties in African literature. It also analyses the role English plays in the language policies of African states and explores probable developments resulting from socio-political attitudes towards the language.
