Rezensionen / Stimmen
The Phoenix Directive is a fast-paced sequel as we follow the
riveting story of the protagonist, Copeland, who's been wrongfully accused of
espionage, terrorism and treason. Fabricated evidence portrays Jack Copeland as
a rogue agent bent on betraying his country.
The tension kicks off into an intense
escape scene with Langdon and Copeland navigating the mysterious and winding
canal district of Vienna while being pursued by dangerous adversaries.
The central conflict is a conspiracy called the Phoenix Directive,
which threatens global stability. The action sequences are well-written and
exciting, making effective use of the global setting to enhance the escalating tension.
The writing style effectively immerses the reader in a high-stakes
environment, characterised by sharp dialogue, strategic planning, and
unexpected twists. All this set against a terrifying pursuit as the net closes
on Copeland, Langdon and Elisabeth, who has been drawn in after the masterminds
decided to use her to expose Copeland.
The pacing is well-structured, with a continuous build-up of
tension. The imminent threat of the Phoenix Directive adds urgency, engaging
the reader's curiosity about its implications and the lengths to which the
characters will go to stop it.
The setting descriptions of the various sites, shrouded in fog and
rain, and biting cold are evocative and build the mood and atmosphere, making
the scenes feel extremely vivid, immediate and immersive. The use of sensory
details like the derelict rail yards and industrial wastelands, and other dramatic
environments the protagonists both use and fight against, effectively builds pressure
and evokes an ominous feeling of looming danger.
The Phoenix Directive is an engaging and
well-crafted thriller that successfully combines action, suspense, and
character-driven storytelling. The relentless pace and non-stop action
sequences will satisfy any diehard fan of the spy thriller novel. Ross is a
master of metaphor, simile and other tools of his craft and uses them to
generate an atmospheric and credible spy thriller. This book cements Ethan Ross as a masterful
and commanding author of the genre.
