Dark
Shadow is book 4
of the Jack Copeland Series. Once again, readers are taken along for a
thrilling ride into the murky world of covert intelligence, terrorism, and global
intrigue.
The book
is set against the dramatic backdrop of early 2000s post-9/11 global tensions
and follows our hero, Jack Copeland, a veteran and skilled intelligence
operative, as he navigates a treacherous web of mystery.
The story
begins with Copeland at Ataturk Airport in Istanbul. His senses, finely tuned
by years of intelligence work, pick up some odd behaviour in the terminal. There is a suspicious group of travellers and
some apparently ordinary passengers. Copeland knows they are anything but
innocent. His unusual talents prepare us for a journey filled with espionage,
tension, and action.
The
subsequent operation stretches from Istanbul to Dubai, from Syria to Greece and
beyond. Copeland unravels a dangerous and complex plot involving terrorist extremist
groups, international arms dealers, and furtive figures like Marwan Fawaaz and
the lethal Hassan al-Masri, whom no one can find. The tentacles of the
extremist organisation are far-reaching and almost impossible to track. Will
Copeland be able to uncover the nefarious plans laid by these two in time?
Jack's
work with intelligence agencies such as the CIA, NIO and MI6 shows
behind-the-scenes intrigue in the fight against terrorism. This delicate
balance, which must be achieved, also uncovers the issues of trust and sensitive
information-sharing in the intelligence community.
Copeland is more than a stereotypical action
hero. His character is multifaceted and displays qualities like strategic
thinking, great planning and a sense of morality and honour, all of which set
him apart.
Dark
Shadow marvellously portrays the moral ambiguity and complexity of the modern
geopolitical landscape. Themes of trust, loyalty, duplicity, and the global
fight against terrorism are explored in detail. The story also illuminates the
personal and emotional sacrifices made by those in the intelligence world,
which can often be lonely and terrifying. We see this in Jack's relationship
with Elisabeth, a journalist and operative who shares his commitment to
uncovering the truth.
Dark
Shadow is an engaging and rewarding read, and the storyline unravels like a
film. Brilliant.
Ross
writes crisply and with a great sense of timing and plot structure. At no time
does any structure fail or disappoint; the pace remains relentless and
thrilling, and his character development is sublime.
