Goal Programming (GP) is perhaps the oldest and most widely used approach within the Multiple Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) paradigm. GP combines the logic of optimisation in mathematical programming with the decision maker's desire to satisfy several goals. The primary purpose of this book is to identify the critical issues in GP and to demonstrate different procedures capable of avoiding or mitigating the inherent pitfalls associated with these issues. The outcome of a search of the literature shows many instances where GP models produced misleading or even erroneous results simply because of a careless formulation of the problem. Rather than being in itself a textbook, Critical Issues in Goal Programming is designed to complement existing textbooks. It will be useful to students and researchers with a basic knowledge of GP as well as to those interested in building GP models which analyse real decision problems.

The book performs well its primary role in discussing the criticisms levelled at goal programming. The book will also be of interest to those not specifically involved with goal programming but wishing to keep abreast of economic modelling techniques in general.

Goal programming (GP) is a widely used technique in operational research, but, despite its popularity, this approach has been criticized and in some cases the the results derived from GP models have been disappointing. In this book, the author has demonstrated that in most cases these problems are not inherent in the logic of GP but are the result of careless formulation of the problem and of unsatisfactory use of the approach. Throughout the book these critical issues associated with GP techniques have been well illustrated and possible remedies have been suggested... This is an informative and well structured book. It is designed to complement existing textbooks on GP. It wil be of interest to students and researchers with some knowledge of GP, as well as the practitioners who are involved in building GP models for real-life decision problems.
