This work of travel literature is in two volumes. The first describes a journey or "pilgrimage" around the coast of the Irish island of Aran, a walk along the wild southern cliff-line of the Atlantic, including the Western Brannock Islets, followed by a return around the low-lying northern coast. It explores the diverse features of the strange, stony terrain - its archaeology, botany and birdlife, its history and folklore - and elucidates its Irish placenames. The second volume explores the human and natural worlds of the interior of the island.
