Computing in Linguistics and Phonetics

Linguistics and phonetics have come to rely heavily on computing for many aspects of research and teaching. The basic skills of simple computer use and programming can be learnt in general computing courses. However, linguistics and phonetics have developed applications which provide a unique context in which to acquire computing skills. From speech analysis and recognition to natural language processing and machine translation, computing in linguistics and phonetics requires a special understanding of the capabilities of the computer. This book is an introduction to the applications of computing in linguistics and phonetics. It provides survey chapters on some of the principal areas of computer use in the field, written by authors with particular research interests in each area.
