In 1907 Rilke visited the memorial exhibition of Cezanne paintings at the Salon d'Automne in Paris. These letters, written by Rilke to his artist wife Clara, are the spontaneous record of his response to those paintings. They also offer meditations on other artists, especially Van Gogh and Rodin.
