This work begins with a look at the origins of Islam, and its early development and divisions. Its history is then traced through to the present time, utilizing both Muslim and non-Muslim sources. It concludes with an examination of the state of Islam at the beginning of the 21st century. It aims to go beyond the emotional and superficial to offer a serious and sober understanding of Islam. Islam, it argues, is faced with a choice between radical Islamism and a bold new look at its understanding and interpretation of the Qur'an.
