This book is the first reference-work to document the accentological state of English between 1701 and 1800. Based on a broad, 400,000-line sample of 18th century British verse, the DSA reproduces in their metrical contexts all words exhibiting, stressing, unusual by present-day standards, in alphabetic and chronological order. Its identification of stress-forms unique or peculiar to many of the forty individual authors included in the corpus makes the DSA useful to the literary scholar as well as to the historian of phonetics, as an instrument of textual attribution.
