This study describes how Czechs who remained in Austria-Hungary during World War I faced both military and civil repression as well as the general economic misery that afflicted historic Czech lands. Other factors, from the re-emergence of parliamentary government in the midst of the war to the introduction of both Wilsonian and Bolshevik ideals, had profound effects on the popular mood as well, driving Czechs away from Vienna and toward the acceptance of an independent Czechoslovak state.
