The notion of 'sustainability' has been growing in importance over the last twenty years, and is now considered a significant area of study.
This four-volume set introduces the reader to 'sustainability' as a concept, a contested idea, and a political goal. Bringing together a range of articles and published papers that have influenced the course of thinking in social science, the collection examines the links between the natural and social sciences, as well as the public policies that thought surrounding sustainability has helped to develop.
Rezensionen / Stimmen
"The 72 previously published articles of this collection offer an opportunity to read the development of ideas and range of viewpoints true of this field. The editor has divided the four volumes into four broad topics: sustainability, sustainable development, sustainability indicators, and post-sustainability. The 18 articles in v.1 provide background, including Thomas Malthus' "The theory of population," Aldo Leopold's "The land ethic," and E.F. Schumacher's "The role of economics," among others. The articles in v.2 present various viewpoints and critiques on the concept of sustainable development by authors that include Susan Baker, Donald Worster, David W. Pearce, Richard B. Norgaard, and Paul Ekins, among others. Some official reports by international organizations such as the United Nations Environmental Programme are included. Redclift provides an introduction to the set and a chronological table of the articles. The articles themselves appear without further introduction. An index is included in v.4." --Reference & Research Book News
