Tina Berning and Michelangelo Di Battista

Die Künstler Tina Berning und Michelangelo Di Battista haben seit Beginn ihrer Zusammenarbeit ein Terrain betreten, das sie seitdem fesselt. Die Manipulationsmöglichkeiten des Computers ignorierend, verbinden sie ihre Arbeitsfelder - Zeichnung und Fotografie - anachronistisch auf analoge Weise. Es entstehen Eingriffe an den Gesichtern von Frauen, die - festgehalten von di Battistas Kamera oder direkt auf einer Fotografie angewendet - Störungen hinterlassen. Diese Brüche und Leerstellen jedoch scheinen ihre Schönheit zu befördern, und den Gesichtern eine Tiefe zu verleihen, die anrührt. Die scheinbare Maske maskiert nicht sondern bringt eine Authentizität ans Licht. Immer wieder überschreiten die beiden Künstler die Grenzen ihrer Disziplinen, um ihre Position im gegenwärtigen Kontext der Definition von Schönheit einzuordnen. In diesem Band werden ihre vielfältigen Ansätze erstmals in einer Monografie zusammengefasst.

Since initiating their collaboration, artists Tina Berning and Michelangelo Di Battista have tread terrain that has captivated them ever since. Ignoring the ways that computers can manipulate images, the two combine drawing and photography to create anachronistic, analogue works. The artists alter women's faces-either captured by Di Battista's camera or applied directly to a photograph-leaving behind disturbing traces. These fractures and voids, however, seem to make them even more beautiful, lending their faces a touching profundity. What appears to be a mask does not conceal anything, but rather brings a kind of authenticity to light. The two artists time and again transgress the boundaries of their respective disciplines as they sort out their stance within the contemporary context in which beauty is defined. Their multifaceted approaches are assembled together for the first time in this monograph.
