Starting in Venezuala in February 1987, Quentin Crewe's journey around South America took him to Colombia, Ecuador (where he met a tribe only visited by 20 Europeans before - they ate the first three), Peru and the High Andes, Chile and Argentina, where he studied the relationship between the Argentinians and Paraguay and Brazil, all the time capturing both the old spirit of South America - the revolutions, the gaucho image, the power of religion - as well as looking forward to the beginnings of the immense importance South America will have in the next 100 years, with its immense natural wealth now being channelled towards modernization and growth.
