Papanoutsos' philosophy of art revolves around the phenomenon of the aesthetic experience. The aesthetic experience culminates in what he calls the aesthetic emotion. Through its form and its inherent meaning, a work of art raises the mundane experiences and the common passions of artist and appreciator to a qualitatively different plane. On this plane ordinary passions are cleansed and enriched. The aesthetic emotion is this state of purified, intensified and uplifted affectivity.
