Pauline Podbrey, a Jewish immigrant from Lithuania, came to South Africa in the 1930s. While still a schoolgirl, she was active in trade union affairs, and this autobiography provides an account of life among the Comrades in Durban and Cape Town, in the 1940s and the early 1950s. The book also covers the years from 1952 to 1955, which Podbrey and her husband, H. A. Naidoo, spent in Budapest - an experience which led them to complete disillusionment with Communism.
