This book is written from notes of a course given at the Universite Pierre et Marie Curie in 1985, 1986 and 1987. It is addressed to students with a good knowledge of basic numerical analysis, a general idea of variational techniques and finite element methods for partial differential equations and a little knowledge of fluid mechanics. Its purpose is to prepare them to do research in numerical analysis applied to problems in fluid mechanics.
