The attempts at dialogue between Christian theologians and Aztec sages in 16th-century Mexico ended in failure, mainly because no attempt was made to understand the culture which these missionaries had come to evangelize. Now, in this era of the new evangelization, a new encounter with Hispanic reality has become possible. Mindful of the debts of the past and with respect for the richness of diverse cultures, this book breaks the silence to take up the challenge. First, the contributors present a picture of the four major streams that make up the major part of the US Hispanic reality today, sketching both their history and current pastoral challenges. Then six theologians accompanied by Hispanic mentors when they themselves are not Hispanic, look to how both Hispanic and non-Hispanic ministers can be prepared to meet the needs of Hispanic communities. The contributors are: Carlos B. Cordova, Gary Riebe-Estrella, Mark R. Francis, John E. Linna, Ana Maria Pineda, Barbara E. Reid, Moises Sandoval, Guillermo Fernandez-Toledo, Jaul J. Wadell and Dominga Zapata.
