The data processed by information processing systems more and more often relate to textual support. This makes language engineering an essential feature in processing these data. This book aims to give a progress report on the current state of this field, specifying both its advantages and limitations. It is structured in three major parts. First, an overview is given of the main tools and formalisms for automated language processing at lexical, syntactic and semantic levels. Next, coverage is given to the current tools of definition and management of essential linguistic resources in many projects of language engineering. Finally, the principal applications are detailed: terminology construction, indexing, semantic filtering and search for textual information, automatic abstract, automated translation, automatic text comprehension and generation, and finally man-machine dialogue.

He has published more than one hundred journal and conference papers in the fields of language understanding and computerized linguistic resources for automated language processing.
