This book analyses the reasons why, from the mid-19th century onwards, anthropologists and travellers used the practice of taking facial moulds which they contended was an "authentic" and "objective" way of documenting the populations they encountered in their travels. Studying the Italian cases the author explores the ideological implications of these notions of authenticity and objectivity in the realms of anthropology, aesthetics, and art.
