This is a tribute to the genius of Gosciny and Uderzo and a working companion to the world of their indomitable Gaul. It covers five topics: the background to the creation of Asterix and the subsequent success; a book-by-book breakdown showing how the series has developed artistically; the comedy of Asterix and the morals and meanings that can be attached to it; how the books are translated; and rare Asterix strips never before published in English. Five short "bonus" sections cover topics that recur throughout the series. Features on the principal characters describe their origins and how they have changed.
