Mouldering Pearl

In 1997, when China reasserts its rule on Hong Kong, the capitalist enclave will be part of a communist state. This history of the colony examines the events leading up to the Sino-British agreement and the outlook for the future. The author draws on his long personal experience of the colony to provide an impression of this society and the fears and divisions that are currently troubling its people, as the rich prepare their boltholes in the West and the less well-off view the approach of 1997 with anger and apprehension.
