In this lecture, Baroness Park reflects upon "difficult places" in which she served during her long and varied career in the British diplomatic service. She focuses on issues of human rights in the countries of the former Soviet Union but she also includes other areas. The book also contains reminiscences of times she spent in the Congo and North Vietnam. Baroness Park joined the Foreign Office in 1948 and had a diplomatic career lasting three decades, including spells of service in Moscow, Leopoldville, Lusaka, Hanoi and Ulan Bator. She is a member of the Board of the British Library and a former Governor of the British Broadcasting Corporation.
