New Museums

The explosion, worldwide, of new museums and art galleries has been one of the most striking features of the cultural landscape during the 1980s. In Japan it is estimated a new museum opens at least once a week. This sudden flowering of (museology) has thrown into sharp relief the proper role of the museum and art gallery. How relevant is the traditional "white cube" to an era of audio-video technology. This book follows the International Symposium on New Museology at the Royal Academy and presents New Museums worldwide from Hans Hollein's underground Salzburg museum to Ian Ritchie's light weight lifts at the Reina Sophia, Madrid.
