Carbohydrates are associated with a plethora of important biological processes and have been implicated in the onset and progress of many lethal diseases. They have attracted a great deal of recent research interest from both synthetic chemists and glycobiologists, and have been identified as novel targets of therapeutic importance. This book, which is aimed at synthetic and medicinal chemists, hopes to introduce both undergraduates and research students to the
chemistry and biology of carbohydrates. The book investigates methods for synthesising carbohydrates in a systematic and logical manner and provides real examples from the literature to exemplify the procedures introduced. Both traditional and modern methods for synthesising carbohydrates, including
enzymatic and solid- phase techniques, are discussed.
Rezensionen / Stimmen
Oligosaccharides have for a long time been the central topic in carbohydrate chemistry. It is therefore essential that students entering research in modern carbohydrate chemistry be taught the essentials about oligosaccahride chemistry and biology. The present book tries to meet this demand and succeeds quite well ... All in all the book is excellent for its purpose as an introduction to the beginning graduate student. It teaches the basics about oligosaccharide
synthesis and biology in an easily understandable and entertaining way. I gave the book to a couple of my students, and they were very happy with it * The Royal Society of Chemistry * This book is an easy readable introduction to the present state of knowledge on the synthesis of oligosaccharides. The authors lead the reader gently, step-by-step, into the complex subject of carbohydrate chemistry ... Altogether this is an excellent book which can be recommended for students and practicing chemists who seek an overview of the current state of the synthesis of oligosaccharides * Angewandte Chemie *
