The pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease is now well understood and several pharmaceutical agents offer good symptomatic relief. However the relative frequency of occurrence in the elderly, the distressing nature of the symptoms and the common side-effects of drug treatment make the disease a major challenge for all neurologists. In addition, the continuing hold that an effective "cure" is close at hand will ensure that the disease remains a centre of neurological interest.
