This volume provides an overview of the major advances, controversies, and challenges in research on HIV epidemiology. International investigators present and analyze established epidemiological studies, compare and criticize the methodologies used, identify sources of bias and other methodological problems, and suggest improvements in study design and data analysis. Major areas covered include HIV infection among intravenous drug users; heterosexual and homosexual transmission; natural history of HIV infection; effects of treatment; and vaccine development and trial. Several chapters focus on issues of statistical analysis and confounding, cross-national comparisons, and the different epidemic pattern of HIV in industralized and developing countries. Each chapter is followed by a discussion among several contributors.
