These two volumes are editions of original documents from British archives concerning the exploration, trade and suppression of slavery in West Africa. Relations with individual societies and the earliest methods of administration are also analyzed in detail. Volume II covers the period of international partition and illustrates both constitutional and economic development as well as the structures of the states of the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Gold Coast (Ghana) and Nigeria. The statistical appendices gather together published and unpublished records establishing the values of British trade with West Africa and the financial records of each territory.
