The world is changing. Development means change and migration is an intrinsic part of development. Women who migrate experience significant changes in their lives including an enhanced status and a more defined role in the development process. However, not all changes are for the good. The issue of when and in what circumstances migration has positive effects was considered by an Expert Group in Mexico in 1991 and the papers discussed are presented in this publication. Issues covered included female migration definitions, inadequacies of existing data, biased conceptual approaches and implications of female migration for policy.
