Early in 1987, near a remote village on the Peruvian coast, grave robbers plundered an ancient pyramid whose gold treasures were worth millions on the international art market. Carl Nagin followed the trail of greed from Lima to London to Los Angeles involving among others a Nobel Laureate, archaeologists and museum officials. It led to custom seizures, investigations and trials on three continents. Through access to government documents and interviews, Nagin has reconstructed these events, highlighting the accountability of those involved in acquiring stolen art.
