WAIS and Gopher Servers

This book is a tutorial to the use of WAIS and gopher. It describes how to use a few WAIS and gopher clients for DOS, Macintosh and Unix computers. It also describes how WAIS and gopher servers can be used to enhance library service. To accomplish these goals the author describes the client / server model and provides an overview of the WAIS and gopher protocols in chapter one. Chapters two to seven describe how to use various WAIS and gopher client software for DOS, Macintosh and Unix computers. Chapter eight describes how to use veronica. Chapter nine describes how to create a WAIS and gopher server on a Unix computer. Chapters ten to 13 describe various gopher server tools used to provide enhanced library service. The book is intended to be used in conjunction with a particular gopher server, the Gopher at the NCSU Libraries, but this is not necessary. In many cases, the book refers to external texts, scripts or files. All of these can be retrieved from the Gopher at the NCSU Libraries in a directory named "Finding Your WAIS Through a Gopher Hole".
