From Marc to XML

"Third Millennium Cataloging" addresses the many changes in cataloging occurring today, partly, although not exclusively, due to the rapid evolution of information technology. It provides an ongoing set of guides to problems of contemporary cataloging and clarifies issues, primarily in the electronic environment. While useful for catalogers on all levels, it is aimed primarily at an audience of experienced catalogers. Each book in the series includes an instructional front end, plus exercises and examples of best practice. Authors are acknowledged experts on their respective topics and, in many cases, experienced speakers and workshop leaders.As library systems move towards an XML basis for storing, processing, or exposing critical bibliographic and other information, they need understand and plan for the use of XML with their legacy MARC systems and data. To this end, Moen provides background information on both MARC and XML, in addition to current topics such as interoperability, metadata reuse, and cataloging.
A variety of projects, both anticipated and currently underway, are featured, including discussions with project leaders with a view towards how they are tackling particular problems.
