This book is intended chiefly for users who have not encountered Unix before and is an illustrative guide assuming no familiarity with other computer systems. The system principally described is the Unix system V; however other implementations, in particular Berkeley Unix, are given due attention, and the book considers the directions in which Unix systems are evolving. The "Bourne shell" is discussed in detail, and other current shells such as the "C-shell" are also covered, pointing out their differences and similarities. In addition, the programming interface between the C language and the operating system is described.
