Haute Couture & Pret-A-Porter is a fluently written, excellently illustrated survey of 250 years of fashion. The Gemeente Museum in The Hague has a new residence at its disposal for its impressive costume collection. The collection counts some 40,000 pieces and covers the period from the sixteenth century to the present day. It contains western clothing as it was worn in The Netherlands, but also the leading international fashion and the matching accessories and jewellery. On the basis of approximately forty of the best pieces from the private collection, the book outlines the development of international fashion. The book features many contemporary designers such as Chanel, Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Karl Lagerfeld, Issey Miyake and Yves St. Laurent.
