The mortgage lending crisis of 2008 in the UnitedStates has become a major political and social issue(Reuters, 2008). Within this dilemma are two specificproblems which may be solved to mutual benefit.First, there is an abundance of empty homes on themarket; and second, there are people who cannotqualify to buy acceptable housing due to stricterlending standards.Specifically, this study will address the need foraffordable housing and the concurrent problem ofempty ¿McMansions¿, a dwelling type increasinglyavailable due to the current mortgage crisis. In aneffort to provide a solution to the housing crisisfor various population groups, three differentresidential designs will be designed within aMcMansion, with one unit each designed specificallyfor seniors, small families, and young professionals. Each will incorporate design features that seek topromote community, mutual support amongst theresidents, and principles of sustainability. The McMansion to be repurposed will be located in asuburban area of Washington, D.C. where the cost ofhousing is especially expensive. As this is not yet afamiliar housing solution, opposition to the projectdesign is anticipated.
