Protective Operations: A Handbook for Security and Law Enforcement is designed as a reference for law enforcement and security organizations tasked with protecting the welfare of an individual or groups of individuals. To be effective and professional, protective operations require the incorporation of a variety of skill sets. However, many departments and jurisdictions have only limited resources and training available. Filling this void, the book identifies issues particular to local law enforcement - and the private security teams that may be called in later - and offers suggestions and guidance for confronting high-threat scenarios as well as the more mundane protective details.
Highlights:
Details the essence of local law enforcement protective operations that are run, in large part, covertly
Examines threat assessment from both hostile organizations and unknown adversaries
Provides a solid understanding of operational security, situational awareness, and surveillance detection
Includes examples from real-world attacks occurring over the past sixty years
Reinforces the need for training in specific tactics and techniques
Emphasizes training for confronting the adversary
Focuses on the economics of providing the most protection for the least cost
Addresses issues surrounding possible direct violations of the law and department policy and procedures
The author's decades of training, research, and experience provide invaluable tested and proven protocols for keeping subjects safe in a hostile environment.
Rezensionen / Stimmen
"McGovern stresses the importance of individual team members' training, using vivid, recent scenarios that resonate with the reader, and, further, addresses the personal and tactical aspects of various competencies and skills necessary for successful protection-related operations. The author places emphasis on making critical decisions by conducting proper threat assessments for safe and successful operations. Readers are constantly reminded that the mission in protection may be, and usually is, contrary to operators' former law enforcement or security training and instincts. One of the clear strengths of the book ... is the use of realistic and credible scenarios. The actual scenarios sprinkled throughout each chapter ... lend credibility to the work and provide excellent support to the central themes of each section. Overall, the book may challenge some readers' underlying assumptions and spark critical thought; it is thus an excellent basis for discussions in a classroom setting. Security has a dearth of reliable sources, lacking a professional foundation of knowledge by credible authors. This work begins to fill that void."
- Linda F. Florence, Ph.D., CPP, Dean of Strategic Security and Protection Management, Henry-Putnam University, in Journal of Strategic Security
"The reader will appreciate the case studies that highlight and underscore relevant topics and concepts. Readers will also gain valuable knowledge and insight from the in-depth discussions of assessing risk and managing threats, conducting protective advances to prevent attacks, and operational security."
